"The Sound of Summer Running" from "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury

On an evening in June, Douglas sees a pair of sneakers in a store window. Douglas wants the sneakers. His father tells him to wear last year's tennis shoes. Douglas cannot find the words to explain why he must have the new ones. For Douglas, summer should begin with new sneakers. All the good feelings of summer are in the sneakers. Douglas takes all of his money to Mr. Sanderson's shoe store. He doesn't have enough money to pay for the sneakers so he gives Mr. Sanderson some of the money and promises to run errands. Douglas asks Mr. Sanderson to try on the sneakers. He wants him to see how good they feel. Suddenly Mr. Sanderson understands why Douglas wants the sneakers. He give Douglas the new sneakers and a list of errands to do.
